LG 2017 OLED TVs first to offer lossless Dolby TrueHD

LG’s 2017 OLED TVs will be the first TVs to support Dolby TrueHD, which is a lossless sound technology. It is being added through a firmware update that should reach all owners this month.

‘Hybrid log gamma’ is yet another a new video format that promises better picture quality for broadcast and live TV. So how is it different from Dolby Vision and HDR10?

Hybrid log gamma, or HLG, is another kind of high dynamic range (HDR), similar to HDR10 and Dolby Vision. All three promise better picture quality for compatible TVs than standard dynamic range material — aka the TV shows and movies you’re probably watching now. Is your new 4K TV already obsolete? The short answer is “Nope.”

Just when you thought you could take a breather and buy a new 4K TV, it seems like 8K is just around the corner.

Already Japanese broadcaster NHK, along with Sharp, Sony, Samsung, LG and others, has shown or announced plans for 8K TV and/or 8K broadcasts. New 8K compatible video standards are being rolled out now. And every year at the annual CES where new models are introduced, concept TVs with 8K resolution are on display.
